Horse racing has been around for hundreds of
years and is popular in many areas of the world. In fact, one of the
earliest examples of horse racing is the chariot races during the
ancient Roman times! There are several forms of racing, and all of
them are fun and exciting to watch. The different kinds of races are
Thoroughbred, Quarter, and Endurance. There are different breeds of
horses for different kinds of racing. They race on tracks that vary
from dirt to synthetic surfaces such as polytrack. While there is
much money made from the breeding of racehorses, the gambling
industry also makes a lot of money during the races.
The first racing meet was held in 1665 in Salisbury Plains, which is
now called the Hampstead Plains, in Long Island, New York. It was
supervised by the colonial governor, Richard Nicolls. The course was
named Newmarket. However, organized horse racing wasn’t started
until 1868 when the American Stud Book was started. By 1890, there
were 314 horse race tracks. Gambling was outlawed in the early
1900s, which almost destroyed horse racing. Parimutel betting, begun
in 1908, turned the entire thing around. In this kind of betting,
the bet is made against other betters instead of the house, so it
wasn’t seen as bad as a regular bet. The sport flourished until
World War 2, and didn’t regain its popularity again until horses
started to win the Triple Crown – a series of races made up of the
Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and Belmont Stakes. |

Thoroughbred racing is the most popular form of racing horses, but endurance racing is also a popular version. This began around 1955 in California and the first race was the start of the Tevis Cup.
The race is a hundred mile, one day long ride from Squaw Valley, Placer County to Auburn, California. Quarter horse racing is much older than endurance racing, starting in 1674 in Virginia.
The race consisted of just two horses that raced each other down the village streets. |
